Philip Schofield opens Queen Annes School
Date: 31st October 2011
Queen Anne's School is an independent girls' school in Caversham, Reading. Founded in 1894, the school has seen many developments since that time in all areas - curriculum, teaching, pastoral care and facilities. In 2006 the Governors with support from the Grey Coat Foundation approved a strategic plan for the School.
HLM worked closely with the School reviewing refurbishment and new build options to maximise the School's boarding accommodation. This detailed review period included briefing, space planning and layouts, existing building analysis, cost evaluation and local consultations.
Phase 1 of the scheme, Holmes House was completed in August of 2011 and was officially opened on the 12 October 2011 by Phillip Schofield, who tweeted to his 1 million plus followers that the building was amazing!
"HLM designed this building to a very high - but affordable - specification and the result is outstanding accommodation which is ideal for the living and learning environment of Queen Anne's School. It moves school accommodation into a new generation, which retains traditional practicalities whilst at the same time embracing modern environmental and technical requirements. It is a resounding success! " Vice Admiral Peter Dunt - Chair of Governors
David Minnis Associate Director of HLM said, "one of the primary considerations in designing the proposed scheme is that they enhance not only the School, but the surrounding neighbourhood. Queen Anne's School is an integral part of the community and its new boarding accommodation buildings strive to achieve a local context, character and modern design which enable the School to meet its strategic aims but also provide new buildings which enhance the School and community. HLM have drawn on significant educational experience and other fields to produce a design which the School feels is an excellent addition to its facilities and enhances its reputation as an independent Girls School.
