Wakefield Kindergarten

Discipline: Architecture

Client: Wakefield Grammar School Foundation

This new kindergarten is located on the first and second floor of 8-10 Margaret Street, adjacent to St John's Church in the conservation area.

On the first floor, three large classrooms have been created with wet and quiet areas defined by ceiling features. On the upper floor, an activities room and staff facilities have been formed with views across to the church, linked to the classrooms below by a two-storey atrium in the heart of the building. This central space allows views through the whole building and unites the two staircases from the ground floor.

Strong use of colour and purpose-built furniture unifies the spaces. The whole scheme is designed to stimulate the children's senses through textural materials, careful application of colour and light and the use of scented plants externally.
