BSF Sheffield - Yewlands Technology College

Yewlands School is a DfES-designated Technology College with approaching 900 pupils, one of the first to be redeveloped under the BSF Sheffield programme. It was split across two sites, so our brief was to create a single, sustainable campus, involving refurbishment of one of the main buildings and new complementary facilities.

A highly adaptable single building, consisting of a central teaching block, halls block and sports centre, sits beside an existing building which has been remodelled to form a science department. The linear buildings and the site's grid pattern comfortably allow for future growth.

Brightly lit, open communal areas feature throughout, thanks to roof-lights, top-lit light wells and large opening windows to maximise natural ventilation and daylight. Additional environmental measures include biodiverse roofs, rainwater harvesting, energy-efficient and presence-controlled lighting, low-flush WCs, spray taps, new boilers and a sustainable urban drainage system.

The remodelled school is a marked transformation and a fittingly sustainable educational facility that Yewlands believes will become a centre of excellence.
