Charterhouse School
Discipline: Architecture
Client: Charterhouse School, UK
Charterhouse is one of England's greatest and most beautiful schools. The school, which celebrates its 400-year anniversary in 2011, was moved from London to its current home near Godalming in Surrey in 1872, and has expanded over the past 140 years. HLM's role was to create a masterplan to satisfy the school's vision for the next 400 years; maximising the existing estate and buildings, responding to educational and estate drivers in both the short and long-term; and in so doing developing a flexible response to Charterhouse's plans and framework for the future.
The first phases of the masterplan are underway:
• Arrival - a new reception, access road, and staff car parking to enhance the sense of arrival and eradicate vehicle and pupil conflicts on school grounds
• Staff accommodation - nine new individual residences for the teaching staff designed to complement the Peperharow Road setting
• Enhanced sports facilities, including a new teaching swimming pool at the Queen's Sports Centre, three new Astroturf pitches, six tennis courts, an extension to the gym, and four new squash courts
• International standard of science provision - new bespoke science facilities incorporating the latest technology.
