Holycross College
Discipline: Architecture
Client: O'Hare & McGovern
Holy Cross College, designed by HLM and RPP Architects, is a state-of-the-art secondary school in Strabane, Northern Ireland. It was formed by amalgamating two single-sex secondary schools and a co-ed grammar school, totalling around 1,800 pupils, on one site.
The school design was conceived with sustainability and emotional and visual stimulation in mind. The 115 classrooms are colour coded for easy orientation, there's excellent provision for languages, music and drama, and the sports facilities are large enough to be used by other schools in the area. Holy Cross College's accommodation was developed around a series of collegiate courtyards, providing opportunities to create enclosed and semi-enclosed outside spaces that are secure, well supervised, and lend themselves to outdoor learning and even an open-air theatre.
