Newport High School
Discipline: Architecture
Client: Newport City Council
Newport High School, a new build replacement for the existing Bettws High School, was the first secondary school in Wales to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating.
We provided architectural, landscape and interior design services, considering every space a learning space, with an integrated ICT solution allowing these education spaces to function. Traditional corridors have been replaced with shared circulation/activity spaces and the hierarchy of teaching spaces includes small personalised spaces for individual or online learning; traditional classroom spaces with multiple configurations; and large learning spaces using flexible partition walls.
The new school has been a triumph for the school, which having seen student numbers declining has achieved an increase in pupil applications of 50%, and it has also been a success for the team, receiving recognition for its sustainability credentials as well as its design and construction.
Awards: Constructing Excellence award for waste minimisation, finalist in the Constructing Excellence Innovation and Sustainability awards.
