University of Sheffield - Arts Tower
Discipline: Architecture
Client: University of Sheffield
The 22 storey tower block housing several arts departments at the University of Sheffield is an iconic 1960s glass curtain walled building that was listed Grade II* in 1993. In competition, HLM Architects won the commission to provide the University with a Feasibility Studay that would explore how the building could be brought into the current century.
HLM worked with English Heritage and the Local Area and Conservation Planners to develop these options and agree solutions appropriate to the building's listed status. The study informed a detailed briefing from the University to further commission HLM to develop an overall scheme, evaluated by their cost consultant, to stage C andon to full detailed listed building planning applications. These proposals have met all the University's criteria and should elevate the building to one of the highest BREEAM rated buildings in the City.
