Farnham Local Care Centre

Discipline: Architecture

Client: North Downs Community Health NHS Trust

The Local Care Centre comprises the medical activities (associated with a community hospital) alongside 4 group practices, together with the provision of 84 inpatient and continuing care beds. The bed accommodation was designed as a ‘stand alone facility' with its own entrance, linked through to the Core activities, and flexible enough to allow for changes to the bed numbers and to be staffed and managed by a single operator if required.

The entrance hall, together with a continuous feature wall (to promote artworks), creates a link between the GP's and the core activities, thereby achieving a shared functionality of the building. It was considered essential that the new facility was welcoming to patients, visitors and staff as part of an overall ‘healing environment' to promote well-being.
