Germiston Hospital
Discipline: Architecture
The Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) in liaison with the Department of Public Transport, Roads and Works (GDPTRW) appointed HLMSV in association with Prism Architects to manage the planning and construction of a new 300-bed hospital in Germiston South.
To ensure the hospital can remain fully functional and to minimise disruption during construction, the south-eastern triangular portion of the existing site has been chosen for the new medium rise hospital.
The scheme is an H-plan design with a central covered atrium which will form a public waiting area. The two wings run east to west, the southern block is four storeys and the northern block, five storeys. A central lift, ramp and walkway connect the two wings.
Lifecycle cost and sustainability were key considerations in materials and mechanical systems selection, and solar panels supply the main energy source for water heating. Passive solar design principles have influenced the façade design and orientation to enhance the internal climate of the building and reduce the load on the mechanical ventilation and cooling systems. Windows are deep-set with louvres enabling optimal comfort both in summer and winter.
