Gatwick Immigration Removal Centre
Gatwick Immigration Removal Centre
Discipline: Architecture
The Immigration Removal Centre can accommodate a mix of 443 detainees - male, female and disabled.
The complex comprises an Accommodation Building with support facilities, an Entry Building with Gatehouse and Visits, and necessary parking. The site is in close proximity to Gatwick Airport runway and is split by the Airport perimeter Road, presenting a number of unusual design challenges. The building heights are restricted both by the ILS beam which guides planes in to land and also Radar equipment height. The roof material had to be of a non-reflective material with no night-time light pollution.
