The Grade II Listed Cruciform Building by Alfred Waterhouse was converted into 2 floors of teaching facilities for the Royal Free Hospital and UCL Medical School and 4 upper floors of research laboratories with a total gross area of 16,200 sq m.  The external fabric and main staircase was refurbished and reinstated where possible to its original architectural form, while the interiors where completely refitted into modern teaching and laboratory spaces.

The project received a Civic Trust Award Commendation, The Brick Award 2001 and the Worshipful Company of Tylers and Bricklayers Triennial Award for Roof Slating 2002.
