Cornwall Eco-Town

Discipline: Environment

Client: Eco-Bos Development & Imerys

The underlying principle in the developing the Pilot schemes for the Cornwall Eco-town was to create homes for people. It would be easy to see prospective occupiers as components in an experimental project which talks about environmental solutions and communal eco-living. In this case, the house would wear its environmental functions on its sleeve as a statement of intent. However, in our approach the desire to achieve sustainability is inherent in the building and should not override the principle functions of a house which, along with providing shelter, is the creation of a home.

Our proposal for the Cornwall Eco Town looked to go beyond the principles of Passivhaus and Code for Sustainable Homes by testing the building's thermal performance and environment with cutting edge dynamic simulation modelling that takes account of the latest (UKCIP) probolistic weather data, thus offering space for further improvement beyond current standards and providing future proofing of the design solutions.
