HLM were appointed to develop a building that represents their commitment to the delivery of first class healthcare to the local community.  The project represents social regeneration by the provision of contemporary facilities.  To this end, HLM have endeavoured to take advantage of the natural assets of an open site, and focus the design team on developing a scheme that is sustainable, not only in its approach to achieving acceptable energy targets, but also in its approach to flexible planning.

Sustainable design has been tackled from several angles.  The building makes use of ground water for cooling; a biomass boiler provides hot water for general use and the building's core areas are naturally ventilated; the building also makes use of harvested rain-water, and storm-water is managed through a SUDs system.  The design process is regularly audited through the NEAT and AEDET toolkits.
