The HLM designed landscape strategy addresses how people interact with the site. Our overall objective has been to create a sustainable and non-institutional landscape setting for a series of buildings of different scale and image, in a manner which helps to unify the image of the whole hospital and create a therapeutic environment which can contribute positively towards the healing process.

The solution filters and directs people to the area of the hospital which they want to visit and focuses on providing clearly defined routes, car parking and pedestrian walkways, creating pleasant and relaxing external spaces through which people approach the hospital. The landscape design maximises the existing assets along with developing solutions for the future requirements.

External gardens and spaces are located within areas of the site which allow favourable microclimates in which patients, visitors and staff will be happy to sit. The design of these external spaces allows seating in sun, in shade, and under shelter. Planting is used to create colour, texture, sound and smell providing spaces which are interesting and stimulating for all the senses, to assist the healing process.
