Designed to cater for 750 students including 150 sixth formers, this multi award winning school is a welcome addition to the local community of Brackla in Bridgend, Wales. Through a rigorous consultation and workshop process with students, parents, teachers and the wider community, and through a tight, collaborative design and construction process, this school has been extremely successful in achieving a high quality, affordable design with 'Education for All' being at the centre of the brief.
The design response is context sensitive, benefiting from the existing contours and rich ecology surrounding the site. Encouraging students to relate to their surroundings, the landscape has an extensive learning habitat designed to inspire and promote outdoor learning. It is also considerably progressive, using simple and easy to maintain locally resourced and sustainable products and labour.
The architectural expression and resolution of the environmental design sets this building apart. It is in fact the first school in Wales to be BREEAM (2008) Excellent certified.
The benefits to the local community through enhanced ecology, and health and well-being including the use of the sports hall, activity studio, pitches, and amphitheatre have been enormous. It has lifted the spirits of the whole community.
