The heart of the campus building sits at the centre of the Sheffield Hallam University, which is itself in a conservation area. The new building is the metaphorical heart of the day to day student life, providing world-class bespoke facilities alongside open plan learning spaces that encourage active learning and collaboration, enhancing the student experience. This space has been designed as a result of exploration of innovative teaching and learning pedagogies, and a University User Group and community exhibitions helped involve the stakeholders and users, hence contributing to informing the overall design and 'Brand'.
The scheme provides the staff and students with an inspiring, flexible and innovative space, bringing the Campus together and showcasing student services. The stunning design and fresh interiors are a real success with students and staff alike who both use the spaces for learning and socialising as well as aiding future student recruitment. The students of Sheffield Hallam have a building they feel proud of and feel it has improved their student experience.
The landscape design preserves and enhances the existing green 'campus' spaces, improving the biodiversity and visual aesthetics of the area. Sympathetic modifications to the listed boundary wall have been made to retain the character of the area.
An innovative external façade to the building has been developed with a local artist to reflect the site's previous use as a deer park.
RIBA Yorkshire Award 2015 - 'praised for the sensitive way that it broke down the massing of the site to reflect the conservation area setting and how we worked closely with the University to evolve the design to create an outstanding student environment'.
