SLAM Hounslow - Hardinge Barracks

Hounslow Cavalry Barracks was established on Hounslow Heath in Southwest London, as a result of military reorganization at the end of the 18th century. The 'Hardinge' block named after the 1st Viscount Hardinge was constructed in the latter half of the 19th century and is one of the largest, most significant and complete of its type in the country, and has been presented with a Grade II listing.

The works to the Hardinge Block continues the provision of new Junior Rank Single Living Accommodation procured under the Defence Estates SLAM Prime Contract at Hounslow Barracks. It is as a direct result of the need to provide a new home for the Welsh Guards Battalion formerly at Wellington Barracks.

The new accommodation for all ranks, provides 500 en-suite rooms, in new purpose built and refurbished listed buildings, including the Hardinge Block and the Officer's Mess

The usual SLAM approach is based on a Model Standard Specification, which defines the materials, space standards and construction approach, the aim being to provide high quality accommodation efficiently.

Given the proximity of the Hardinge Block, and other buildings of note on the site, the external treatment to the new blocks has been deliberately chosen to ensure a visual consistency in terms of materials and details used. The new blocks are sited in a linear arrangement north-south, echoing the original layout and 'grain' of the existing buildings on the site.
